The sleepy and tranquil town of Ludlow, on the England-Wales border turns into an exciting and stimulating mecca for foodies from all over the country. Why is Ludlow Food Festival so important? It is where the modern British food festival originates, as it was the first to really have any success.
During the second week in September, Ludlow hosts this amazing food festival. It attracts over 180 quality stallholders from the local area. Stallholders are happy to let you have a taste of this or that. Everything is made from producers from this part of the UK. All the great food brings out a relaxed and happy atmosphere, and as you walk through the town and take in the events at the Market Square and all the other venues you will realise how happy you will feel.
It’s not just about the stalls and shopping and tasting; there will be lots of demonstrations from top chefs such as Steve Love and Alan Murchison, and talks from well informed experts. You can get your hands dirty in the live workshops. A food festival is nothing without lots to eat so you will find street traders plying their wares over the weekend.
There are other highlights too. The Sausage Trail is held on Saturday (£4.50) and will take you to different butchers, and encouraging you to use your expert palate to work out the types of sausage. You will watch the experts blind tasting and vote for the best sausage. Once you have seen the winners revealed you can buy what you need and move on to the next thing.
The Real Ale Trail is just £6.50 on Saturday and Sunday during pub hours. It finishes on 4pm on Sunday. Obviously it’s just for the adults, but it’s at least 12 pubs, it includes tasters which means a really fun-filled afternoon. So that’s masterclasses, taste workshops, activities for the kids and the Sunday Specialist food Market in Castle Square. There is lots more, and you will love it.
